Randomized Trial of AI-Powered Mental Health Support Embedded in University Academic Infrastructure

A preregistered six-week randomized controlled trial of Flourish, an LLM-based mental-health support app, offered to 1,137 undergraduates through their university's academic infrastructure rather than as an opt-in wellness service, in the Canadian province with the lowest psychologist supply. Students randomized to app access showed protection against semester declines in positive affect, resilience and flourishing and faster reductions in loneliness than care as usual, with 95% activating the app within two weeks and average use of 3.2 days a week.

Posted to PsyArXiv 2026-09-10 (OSF API date_published); no journal version as of 2026-09-15. Verified through the OSF preprint API and the downloaded 29-page PDF; the osf.io HTML page is a client-side shell. Vendor co-authorship and the fact that the app was introduced through academic infrastructure (with implications for perceived voluntariness) are the two caveats to carry.
