Helping teens learn, plan, and shape the future of AI

Product post in which OpenAI reports early usage figures for ChatGPT for Teens, the under-18 experience launched on 2026-08-18, and announces a College Planner feature, flashcards and quizzes, and three years of support for Boston Children's Hospital's Digital Wellness Lab and its Student Advisory Council. The usage section gives the first vendor figures on teen session length and on how teens respond to built-in break reminders.

Key Findings

  • Teens spend under 15 minutes a day on ChatGPT on average, and fewer than 2% of teens spend more than three consecutive hours; the post contrasts this with a publicly reported five-hour average for teen social media use.
  • In almost half of teen conversations in which a break reminder appeared, the teen took a break or ended the conversation within five minutes.
  • Among teens with sessions longer than three consecutive hours, over 80% had at least one learning-related prompt.
  • In one week, nearly 1.2 million teens used Learning Visualizations and more than 180,000 used Study Mode; teens with access to ChatGPT for Teens sent about 2.7 million more learning-related messages on average than those without it.
  • OpenAI will fund Boston Children's Hospital's Digital Wellness Lab for three years to run a student advisory council of about 22 students (ages 14 to 20) that will test tools and give feedback on teen safety defaults, parental controls and notifications.
  • College Planner, initially for US students in grades 10 to 12, will bring application requirements, deadlines and financial-aid steps into one plan; OpenAI is also funding College Advising Corps.

Methodology Notes

Vendor product telemetry with no denominators, measurement periods, country breakdown or method stated; the five-hour social-media comparison is attributed to an external public report via a link. Dated 2026-10-07 on the page. openai.com returns HTTP 403 to crawlers, so the text was read from the Wayback Machine capture of 2026-10-07 16:06 UTC; the title and date match the OpenAI RSS feed entry.
