AI chatbots and youth suicide risk: current evidence, critical gaps, and a clinical research agenda
Review by researchers at Crisis Text Line examining how general-purpose chatbots and AI companions detect and respond to suicide-risk disclosures from young people, and what the existing evidence cannot show. The authors find that the research base relies almost entirely on single-turn, researcher-generated prompts not designed with youth in mind, that chatbot performance degrades substantially with indirect, ambiguous or gradually disclosed risk, and that the real-world impact of chatbot interactions on youth suicide risk is unknown. They set out a four-priority clinical research agenda.
