Key Findings

• — 91.6% of grade 7-9 students own a phone, first owned at 9.98 years on average; weekly online time rose from 30.7 hours (2022) to 35.17 (2024) to 38.4 (2026)
• — 31.4% had themselves or a classmate experienced an AI-related problem: 15.1% AI-generated fake photos or videos of classmates as pranks, 12.6% scolded for completing homework with AI, 9.4% deceived by AI-generated content, 3.3% disclosed too much personal information to an AI
• — 4.1% had encountered AI-generated violent or pornographic content and 2.5% had seen AI-generated sexual images of classmates
• — Only 31.8% could immediately identify an AI-generated fake news image as false; 15.5% accepted it entirely
• — 20.1% experienced an online risk in the past year (12.4% personal attacks, 11.9% asked for personal data, 7.5% unwanted sexual messages, 5.1% unwanted sexual images); 42.4% registered on social platforms with a false age; 77.3% oppose an under-16 social media ban
• — 53.5% say parents set no limits on phone use; 66.6% have had conflict with parents over phone use; students with no household rules scored lower on media literacy

Methodology Notes

Online questionnaire distributed through official letters to public schools, 27 April to 31 May 2026; 11,920 valid responses from grade 7-9 students (39.4% grade 7, 41% grade 8, 19.6% grade 9; 48.8% female, 48.3% male, 2.8% other; 95.7% public schools). School-distributed convenience sample, not a probability sample. Published on the CWLF site as a report page dated August 2026 and a press release dated 26 August 2026; no separate PDF located. The foundation's 2025 survey of 6,122 junior and senior high students (social media use, intimate-image leaks and generative-AI use; report page dated August 2025) found that about a fifth used generative AI at high frequency, 39.4% verified AI information and only 31.5% had had a parent discuss AI risks with them; it is recorded as an additional source.
