Persona and Persuasive Framing in AI Voice Agents: A 2x2 Field Experiment with Children

Randomised 2x2 field experiment embedded in a public German-language Santa Claus telephone hotline before Christmas 2025, in which children's calls were routed to LLM voice agents that varied persona authority (Santa versus Santa's Helper) and framing (gentle prosocial nudges versus neutral). Persuasive framing roughly quadrupled the share of children voicing a prosocial wish. Persona authority did not change what children wished for but did change whether they stayed on the call.

Key Findings

  • Of 1,072 logged calls, 89 conversations (median caller age 6) met inclusion criteria within the 15-25 December 2025 study window
  • Persuasive framing (at most two nudges) raised the probability of a prosocial wish from 11.6% to 45.7%; the effect held with controls for nudge count, age, call duration and days to Christmas
  • Persona authority showed a near-zero effect on wishes: the Santa persona did not outperform the Helper
  • Persona shaped engagement: children hung up on the Helper within the first minute far more often (65% versus 39%)

Methodology Notes

Agents built on a commercial voice-agent platform using Gemini 2.5; consent gating on the hotline website, fictional authority figure, nudge cap, age-appropriate guardrails and anonymised data. Outcome coded from transcripts with a lexical manipulation check. Small analysed sample after heavy attrition (early hang-ups, duplicates); prosocial nudging is a benign target, so the result shows susceptibility to framing, not harm. Accepted at the 60th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS-60, 2027) per the arXiv comment. v1 submitted 2026-09-30 02:13 UTC (Thursday batch).
