From Chatbots to Confidants: A Cross-Cultural Study of LLM Adoption for Emotional Support

Survey of 4,641 adults in the USA, UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands on use of large language models for emotional support. Mixed models separate country effects from demographic composition. The study also collects 731 multilingual prompts that respondents shared from their own emotional-support interactions.

Key Findings

  • Adoption of LLMs for emotional support varied from 20% to 59% across the seven countries.
  • Being aged 25-44, religious, married and of higher socioeconomic status predicted more positive perceptions (trust, usage, perceived benefit); socioeconomic status was the strongest predictor.
  • English-speaking countries showed consistently more positive perceptions than Continental European countries.
  • The 731 shared prompts mainly concerned loneliness, stress, relationship conflict and mental health struggles.
