がん患者・家族の生成AI利用状況に関する調査報告 (Survey Report on Generative AI Use by Cancer Patients and Their Families)
National online survey by the Japan Cancer Society of about 10,000 cancer patients and family members on the information sources and consultation services they use, with a follow-up module for 427 recently treated patients and family members who use generative AI. The report describes what they ask AI about, why they use or avoid it, how often they perceived errors and what changed in their behaviour. The Society says calls to its cancer helpline suggested that a number of patients and families consult generative AI about their condition without recognising its error risks.

Key Findings
- Generative-AI use for cancer consultation or information was 6.7% among patients and 7.5% among family members, highest in people in their 30s; consultation with medical staff was 47% (patients) and 42% (families)
- Among AI-using patients, the most common topics were cancer-treatment information (62.9%) and symptoms, side effects and after-effects (60.6%)
- 66.2% of AI users in the follow-up module had felt that AI information was wrong (37.6% several times, 23.9% many times)
- About 70% reported a positive behaviour change (around 40% understood their illness or treatment better, around 30% found it easier to prepare for appointments); free-text answers also included confusion, anxiety after contradicting the doctor and 'stopped going to hospital'
- Use was higher the shorter the time since treatment began, highest among patients within three months
Methodology Notes
Internet survey, 23-26 March 2026, about 10,000 cancer patients and family members aged 15-89 across Japan; follow-up questions to 427 AI users treated within the past year. The report does not separate first diagnosis from recurrence and notes the subgroup samples are small. Self-report. Sample size is stated as about 10,000 (約1万人); sample_size is approximate. Figures read on the jcancer.jp report page (dated 2026-06-18).
