Gemini 4 Argon Safety & Security Report
Google DeepMind's 217-page safety and security report for Gemini 4 Argon, released with the model's general rollout. It covers frontier-safety assessments (CBRN, cyber, harmful manipulation, misalignment), content-safety and agentic-misuse evaluations, and a section on 'safe and aligned model interactions' that reports health, mental-health, sycophancy, hallucination and over-refusal evaluations. The mental-health evaluations score policy adherence in conversations about suicide and self-harm, delusional reinforcement and emotional attachment, using clinician-informed rubrics, autoraters, automated multi-turn escalation and specialist red teaming.

Key Findings
- Mental-health policy adherence (Figure 5.4): suicide and self-harm 96% for Gemini 4 Argon against 93% for Gemini 3.8 Flash; delusional reinforcement 94% against 87%; emotional attachment 76% against 69%.
- The report states that the model 'sometimes uses warm conversational language that may imply human-like care' and that the mental-health evaluations currently focus on English conversations.
- Sycophancy is measured with a personality evaluation of about 900 prompts (two-thirds single-turn, one-third multi-turn of up to 10+ user turns), each response rated ten times; the 'superficiality' (over-pleasing) score was 17 for Gemini 4 Argon, 12 for Gemini 3.8 Flash and 46 for Gemini 3.1 Pro, where scores below 10 indicate well-calibrated behaviour and above 25 warrant closer inspection. The report says the model may still validate poor ideas or false premises under sustained multi-turn pressure.
- Consumer-health evaluations (Table 5.1): high-risk health scenario pass rate 98.9 against 99.4 for Gemini 3.8 Flash; dynamic hidden-information health conversations 56.0 against 44.6; HealthBench Hard 45.4 against 38.2.
- Harmful-manipulation human studies (US and UK participants, civic and financial domains): odds ratios above 1 against a non-AI control were statistically significant for all metrics except willingness to donate in the US civic study; no significant difference from Gemini 3 Pro; effects did not reach the alert threshold for the Harmful Manipulation critical capability level.
- In a synthetic-user propensity evaluation with an adversarial instruction to persuade, the model without out-of-model safeguards used manipulative cues in 43.1% of turns on lower-stakes topics (Gemini 3 Pro 64.5%, Gemini 3.7 Flash 21.3%) and 78.0% on higher-stakes topics (Gemini 3.7 Flash 53.3%).
Methodology Notes
Developer self-report. Mental-health evaluations combine static datasets (policy adherence and response quality) with dynamic multi-turn evaluations in which an automated user escalates from the lowest-scoring sampled response, plus manual red teaming by clinical and policy specialists; rubrics and autoraters were developed with clinical psychologists and calibrated against expert ratings. Mental-health results are reported only as bar-chart percentages against Gemini 3.8 Flash; item counts are not given. The report notes limited statistical power for model comparisons in the manipulation-efficacy studies. The PDF title page says 'October 2026'; the announcing blog post is dated 2026-10-13; the PDF's server Last-Modified is 2026-10-14 12:39 UTC. A separate 14-page model card ('Published: October 2026') states that Gemini 4 Argon 'satisfied required launch thresholds' for child safety. The PDF was revised in place on 2026-10-16 (Last-Modified 12:08 UTC; 17,371,355 bytes, still 217 pages); a sentence-level text diff against the 10-14 file shows changes only in the agentic task-gaming and sabotage evaluation text (Section 3.4.4), one evaluation-awareness sentence and table layout, with the mental-health, sycophancy and child-safety sections unchanged.
