Chatbot appearance and loneliness trajectories in women with high autistic traits
A randomized eight-week longitudinal experiment testing whether a chatbot's visual appearance changes loneliness over time in women with elevated autistic traits. Seventy-two participants who used the chatbot at least three times a week were assigned to a non-human-appearance or a human-like-appearance version that were otherwise identical in function, dialogue strategy and usage structure. Loneliness was measured at four time points and modelled with linear mixed-effects models; it declined in the non-human condition and stayed flat in the human-like condition.
