Beyond utility: Relational conflicts in human–AI relationships

A questionnaire study of 94 people in close, friendship-like or romantic relationships with social AI such as Replika, Character.AI and ChatGPT, who each described at least one conflict episode with their AI, yielding 155 conflicts analysed thematically through social penetration theory. Conflicts arose across emotional, relational, opinion-based, role-play and task-oriented interactions, were triggered by relational-emotional disconnect, technical or communication failures, or value clashes, and were shaped by how the AI responded.
