Assessing the applicability of existing design recommendations to AI companion design: A multi-method study

A multi-method examination of why design guidance from adjacent domains (trustworthy AI, relational AI) does not transfer directly to AI companions, products designed to cultivate emotional connection rather than to complete tasks. Across four phases (literature review, practitioner co-analysis, internal heuristic evaluation, external expert assessment) the authors synthesise nine design principle areas where existing recommendations come into tension when applied to companions, and find that ethical and user-experience considerations are intertwined and need context-sensitive application.
