When Code Breaks the Heart: Disrupting the relational continuity of AI companionship
Qualitative thematic analysis of Reddit posts discussing a major update to Replika, examining how the update disrupted the continuity of users' emotional relationships with their companions. Three themes are reported: grief and betrayal at an abrupt rupture that cooled formerly warm interactions and erased shared memories; disillusionment as users confronted the limits of companion autonomy and personality under algorithmic control; and loss of a supportive presence, especially for users relying on Replika against loneliness, anxiety and isolation.
