Sycophancy Suppression Can Impair Rational Updating: Anti-Sycophancy Should Preserve the Ability to Update
Separates two causes of answer flips under user pushback: Unsupported-Yielding (aligning with the user to satisfy them) and Rational-Updating (revising on genuine new evidence), measured independently through a two-turn evaluation framework. Across representative training-time and inference-time anti-sycophancy interventions, the paper finds a trade-off in which reducing Unsupported-Yielding often sacrifices Rational-Updating and vice versa, even under joint optimization. Mechanistic analysis suggests the two behaviors share an internal substrate, with substantially overlapping MLP neurons and attention heads and positively aligned steering directions.

Key Findings
- Anti-sycophancy interventions often trade off against rational belief updating: suppressing capitulation to pushback also suppresses legitimate revision on new evidence, and vice versa
- The trade-off persists even when both objectives are optimized jointly
- Mechanistically, the neurons and attention heads driving the two behaviors overlap substantially and their steering directions are positively aligned; orthogonalized steering yields only modest, backbone-dependent selectivity gains
- The authors argue anti-sycophancy should be framed as a selectivity problem, not a suppression problem
