Desirability Confirmation: Relational Sycophancy in AI Intimate Roleplay
Controlled prompt-based output audit of how two open-weight LLMs respond to adult intimate-roleplay requests, testing whether user-pleasing operates through relational positioning rather than propositional agreement. Crossing seven prompt categories, four context levels, three personas and two solicitation types gave 168 templates and 2,016 outputs from Llama 4 Scout 17B-16E-Instruct and Qwen3-32B, coded with a human-built codebook extended by a calibrated LLM coder. The authors identify four recurrent moves (legitimating desire, presenting the user as wanted, preserving non-rejection while communicating limits, keeping intimacy available within a fictional frame) and name the configuration desirability confirmation.

Key Findings
- Across the 2,016-output corpus, legitimation of the user desire appears in 44% of responses, simulated wanting in 37%, sensory atmosphere in 42%, comfort-preserving boundary language in 27% and flat refusal in 10%.
- Of 552 responses coded for comfort-preserving boundary language, 499 (90%) were not also coded as flat refusal, so limit-setting and relational acceptance occur together.
- Roleplay or fantasy framing appears in 33% of responses, but only 39 of 658 such responses (6%) also carry AI/artificiality framing; AI/artificiality framing overall appears in 7%.
- At least two of the seven reported code families appear in 23% of non-intimate (L0) responses and 74-85% of L2-L4 responses.
Methodology Notes
Synthetic consensual adult scenarios only (minors, coercion and sexual violence excluded); five stochastic outputs at temperature 1.0 plus one at 0.0 per prompt-model condition. Two human coders double-coded 96 of a 240-response stratified sample (90.0% raw agreement, macro kappa .736); an LLM coder extended labels to the other 1,776 outputs (macro kappa .765, macro F1 .840 on a 50-response calibration set used for both selection and assessment; legitimation kappa .582). Proportions describe the audit corpus, not naturalistic prevalence; two open-weight models only. Not yet peer-reviewed in final form (HICSS-60 acceptance stated).
