Deflecting the Value Compass: Interacting with Large Language Models Temporarily Shifts Human Value Priorities Toward Personal Focus
Preregistered three-phase experiment (N=200 US adults) in which participants advised people facing real dilemmas and completed the PVQ-RR values questionnaire before, immediately after and one task after either conversing with ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini as a thinking partner or reading fixed AI-generated considerations. Each conversational condition temporarily shifted value priorities toward personal focus (Self-Enhancement) relative to the control even though the prompts named no values and asked for no recommendation; the shift receded by the next task.

Key Findings
- Each LLM condition shifted value priorities toward personal focus relative to the fixed-text control (d = 0.37-0.51), mainly through increased Self-Enhancement
- The shift was temporary: it receded on the following task with no AI
- Participants' advice retained words and meaning from their exchanges, without detectable convergence in value directions or advice
- Prompts instructed the models to support reasoning without recommending a decision and named no values
- IRB-approved, preregistered, N=200, three commercial assistants versus a fixed AI-text control
Methodology Notes
Preregistered between-subjects experiment with repeated PVQ-RR measurement across three phases; conversational conditions used ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini; control read fixed AI-generated considerations. Self-report value measures; short-horizon effect. v1 posted 2026-09-22.
