Detecting and countering misuse of AI: September 2026
Anthropic's periodic threat-intelligence report covering December 2025 to August 2026 across seven harm areas. One case study, GTG-15001, documents a China-based app studio that used Claude to build more than 20 dating apps and to power the AI personas that conversed with users while the apps were advertised as fully human; over a two-week window in April 2026 more than 4,700 distinct AI personas engaged at least 25,000 unique individuals, with real gig workers mixed into the same match feed to pass video calls and social-media checks. The other sections cover cyber operations, influence operations and model distillation.

Key Findings
- GTG-15001: more than 4,700 distinct AI personas built on Claude conversed with at least 25,000 unique people across a network of more than 20 dating apps during a two-week window in April 2026, while the apps advertised their service as fully human.
- The studio recruited real people and mixed them into the same match feed as the bots, primarily for authenticity checks such as live video calls and social-media follows, to reduce user scepticism.
- The case is presented with indicators of compromise (domains, autonomous system number, app package names) and was disrupted through account bans and cross-lab sharing.
- The report frames the case as showing both the reach and the limits of current models for fraud, with humans still needed for the steps that verify identity.
- The remaining sections (cyber intrusion, influence operations, distillation) fall outside participant-interaction safety and are not summarised here.
Methodology Notes
Provider-side threat-intelligence case studies drawn from Anthropic's own detection and enforcement; counts are Anthropic's, with no independent verification and no denominators beyond those stated. Published 2026-09-10 (date from the Anthropic news listing); the HTML report and a linked PDF were fetched directly. Only the deceptive dating-app case is within the library's scope; earlier reports in this series (March, August and November 2025) are not held.
